Daring to be Different

The need to conform perhaps hits hardest in the Middle School years. The pressure of peers, media, school and families weigh heavily on these young adults and while they attempt to look cool and unfazed on the outside – to a one – each feels like they don’t quite fit in. I met an amazing group of over 100 teen-aged gentlemen and ladies at Chippewa Middle School last week in Chicago. Their passion and ingenuity burned deeply in the hearts but their need to conform creates a deep desire to mask the very talents and contributions that they are here on this earth to make.

Monday mornings are hard enough for most of us, but I know they are hardest on teenagers. What a joyful surprise that upon uttering my first sentence, excited smiles and sweet giggles spread across a classroom of tired faces. My English accent was the bridge to intrigue these students. A cool connection was established along with a willingness to listen to the insights of a 30-year-old spiritual guy.

People who have made the greatest impact in life dared to be different. They stepped outside the box of what the majority called acceptable. Right in Chicago, the obvious example is President Obama, an African American male who swam against the historical tide to become our countries first black president. We explored what he may have been feeling during his teen-aged years and what his secret desires may have been. For Barack Obama daring to be different is the platform through which history is rewritten. Another example is Kanye West who continually innovates in a world of musical mediocrity to create his own different and distinct mark on the music business.

The Divine stamped “DIFFERENT” all over me from the moment of my conception. Imagine what it was like being both a teenager and spiritual in London at a time when my peers were asserting their physical dominance inside the school hallways and out on the street. It was a jungle. I was enmeshed in spiritual practices including meditation and chanting while all my friends were hanging out smoking, drinking, using and dealing drugs. It was frightening and lonely being different.

I have seen over and over again, young people who go on to excel in life stand out. They don’t fit in. They are picked on. Yet they persevere. Their differences birth tolerance and compassion for others. Their challenges transform into huge successes.

We all carry the energetic blueprint for our unique contributions on this earth. It’s time to stop playing it small and turn our back on playing it safe. I believe in each individual’s innate ability to rise out of normality into the greatness of who they were created to be. And I especially believe in the potential of each of Mrs. Salami’s language arts students.

I, too, was always different. I have heard and seen the other dimensions since I was born. It was so hard for me to feel safe with anyone other than my family because I could see all their shadows and, unfortunately had no one, even in my family, to talk to about it all. Over the years, though, I find I give thanks frequently for those years of tough experience. I have always remembered who I am, even though I didn’t always understand what it meant to be me. Now, as I am 61, I am here on my beloved planet helping my brothers and sisters in light remember who they are and what they are capable of with just their love and joy and peace. I was interested in this blog especially because I have always been drawn to middle school children. I think it is one of the toughest periods in a person’s life, as they are living and walking in the worlds of the child and the adult simultaneously. Kind of like what I now do, myself, living in the 3rd dimension and beyond simultaneously. We are all One and One is all there is! Blessings be - Emerald

We kept both you and Jan very busy here in Chicago:) You visited schools and hospitals, volunteering your time and freely sharing your gift. Many, many “angels” made those visits possible.

Seeing you with little Kindergarten children was a wonderful experience. Jan, you were amazing!
Those 5 years old kids are so open and so loving!
They drew “thank you letters” filled with colors, hearts and rainbows! Wow! They still remember ....
they are “letting their light shine”:)

Panache and Jan, your action and words are an inspiration. Living from the heart, even if it means “being different”, trusting the inner wisdom and freely sharing the love that is always, always around us.
